$750 Awards Available for Classroom-to-Home Energy Efficiency Projects
I just received this information regarding an excellent opportunity for 4-H Youth to put CCE 4-H Energy Education “TO WORK” . NYSERDA’s offer nicely incorporates the Science of Energy with community action and leadership, all of which are the very essence of our mission in 4-H Youth Development!!

I will be checking into details regarding the award/working scholarship opportunity. But I wanted to get this out to our NYS 4-H System immediately.

Please let me know if any of you will (or have a local audience who will) be seriously pursuing this.

Here is a quick link to the application and information PDF: http://www.nyserda.ny.gov/en/~/media/Files/EEWD/K-12%20Schools/Energy%20Smart%20Students%20Program/2011%20classroom%20to%20home%20grant%20application.ashx

Thanks and good luck.

Last month, New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) announced a new workshop titled “Energy and Our Changing Earth,” which is geared toward Grades 6-12. Several of these workshops have been set up in the Capital, Mid-Hudson, NYC and Western NY regions. You are able to register for some of these workshops online, but others you will have to send an email indicating your interest in registering. Please include your name and phone number so we can contact you in the event of a cancellation or postponement. Registration/email links are listed below with each workshop. For a complete list of workshop offerings, please visit http://www.getenergysmart.org/EnergyEducation/Workshop.aspx To learn more about the workshops, contact Frank Winters at 1-866-552-4683 or frankw@energy-workshops.org

The NYSERDA is considered a valuable partner in our CCE 4-H Energy Program.  Their training sessions provide excellent, local (NYS) energy resources and curriculum for schools and 4-H.  Their resources and curriculum are also well suited to work with our 4-H Foundation sponsored 4-H Renewable Energy Kits.   The NYSERDA allows 4-H Educators and Key volunteers to take part in their workshops to “train the trainer.”  They encourage 4-H to host workshops in your area.  They do all of the workshop setup, training, and workshop material fees.  All you need to do is host it and help promote/advertise.  Here is the most recent list of Energy Smart Student workshops offered throughout NYS for the rest of this year. Workshops are listed by region. Contact Chip Malone, 4-H Energy Specialist, at cwm4@cornell.edu if you have any questions.

October 10, 2011
I just returned from an AMAZING celebration of 4-H and energy series of events in NYC.   The 4-H Youth Development program sponsored an all day assembly/workshop for approximately 400 school youth in Brooklyn.  They used the CCE 4-H Energy resources and the National 4-H Wired for Wind National Experiment.   The next day I did a workshop for science educators/4-H Staff in Manhattan.
Check out how much energized Brooklyn students are…

See the BeamNY website!

Hi Chip,

I’m sorry we picked a day when you won’t be available for the webinar, but I’m very pleased about the possibility of other members of the CCE Energy and Climate Change team joining us in previewing the website. We would be delighted to have them log in!

If the other members are also interested in signing on with Beam, that will ensure that they get all future emails, as well. They can feel free to contact me if they would like to sign on. And, either way, I’ll do my best to send them what I send you.

Thanks, Chip, hope you’re enjoying the summer!

Sincerely,

Sean Jacobson Western New York Field Organizer BEAM New York 585-567-2271 sean.jacobson

See the BeamNY website!

Thank you for the invitation , Shawn

However I will not be available at all on July 14 as I will be traveling back from the west coast.

Would it be ok for others of our 5 plus member of the NYS CCE Energy and Climate Change team to log in? I had mention to them our visits and the upcoming Beam NY program. It will likely involve them as the program launches. If so please copy them on the information you send me. I am copying them on this note so that they can contact Jasmine Bennett to get log in information.

Hi Chip,

I haven’t forgotten your invitation to stop by your office to preview the educational kits you’ve developed. I simply have not been anywhere near Batavia for work in nearly two months. Hopefully that will happen soon!

However, I do have the pleasure of inviting you to participate in a walkthrough of the beam new yorksm website: beamNY.org. While the site isn’t live, and won’t be until our launch, we know that many of our partners are curious to see what it will contain and how it will help your community.

During this webinar, we’ll walk through the main site, available resources and the social networking aspect of the community-the beam network. After the walkthrough we’ll have time for questions and comments.

Save the date!

Please RSVP to Jasmine.Bennett for log-in information. I would really like to have your input, so I hope you can join us!

Best,

4-H Foundation Sponsors Interactive Renewable Energy Kits

The CCE of Genesee County program, 4-H Sustainable Energy, Get Up and GO, will give youth the opportunity to actually produce small amounts of renewable energy. Youth and leaders will learn about the sources of renewable energy, and see how it is generated and converted into usable power by creating energy from solar, wind and bio fuel sources on a small scale.

In addition to the creation of curriculum and training on sustainable energy, the grant from the NYS 4-H Foundation will help to develop four portable sustainable energy demonstration units that can be used with youth across the state. Each unit will include solar, wind and bio fuel modules that youth and volunteers can use to create small amounts of sustainable energy.

“This grant will make it more accessible for youth, leaders and volunteers around the state to learn how renewable energy can be generated by actually experiencing the process,” said Charles Malone, 4-H Youth Development Energy Program Coordinator.

SET Ambassadors Takes Energy Story to Albany

On Feb 29, several 4-H Teen Leaders traveled to Albany to serve as 4-H Science Ambassadors. They shared some of our latest NYS 4-H Energy resources with state government leaders and others visiting the NYS Capital. Natalee and Camille Wrege, of Oneida County, presented their display on renewable energy/ bio fuels, a venture they recently undertook as a 4-H Energy Project. Evan Jones, Ontario Co., Chris Degener and Gregary Kopache from Rensselaer County showcased their work on GIS Mapping and invited state leaders to “take a spin” on Sparks, the energy bike. Participants were amazed at how much converted leg muscle energy was needed to light up a 50 watt light bulb and a hair dryer. 4-H Science Ambassadors spoke with state legislators and had the opportunity to visit with Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo (D-Endwell), Chairperson on the NYS Assembly Committee on Science & Technology.
